But Miami never got past the divisional round. But critics never stopped suggesting the 1995 title was with Johnson's players, and the Cowboys haven't even reached an NFC championship game since that season.Īfter two years away, Johnson returned with the Miami Dolphins in 1996 and led them to the playoffs the last three of his four seasons. Those Cowboys were headlined by "The Triplets" - quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and receiver Michael Irvin, all three Hall of Famers themselves.īarry Switzer did it two years after the split of Jones and Johnson, who were teammates at Arkansas in the early 1960s. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - DECEMBER 30: Former head coach Jimmy Johnson (C) jokes around with former players Michael Irvin (L) and Emmitt Smith (R) during the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor ceremony at halftime in the game between the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Decemin Arlington, Texas. Others would suggest Johnson's take is revisionist history since he was incensed 30 years ago over suggestions from Jones, also the team's general manager, that any one of 500 coaches could have won a title with the Dallas roster. I don't ever recall us having a difference of opinion." When I say working together, we talked every single day. "The two of us, working together, made history. "I think we're past who gets credit," Johnson said. The Cowboys went from 1-15 in 1989 - the year Jones bought the Cowboys and hired Johnson after firing the only coach Dallas ever had in Landry - to the first back-to-back Super Bowl titles in franchise history to cap the 1992 and '93 seasons. They could easily compete with any modern day team, hands down. One of the theories behind the abrupt end of Johnson's tenure in 1994 was a tussle over who should get credit for the dramatic turnaround in Dallas. I said it earlier and I'll say it again, The 1992 Dallas Cowboys would run with any team today, and this team was assembled 28 years ago.Credit to their coaches: Jimmy Johnson (Head Coach), Norv Turner (Offensive Coordinator) Dave Wannstedt (Defensive Coordinator).Other Notable Asst.: Dave Campo (Defensive Backs), Butch Davis (Defensive Line) and Bob Slowik (Defensive Assistant)Īre the 1992 Boys the best ever? I'm not sure about that, but you can point all over the field and find solid gold talent. Thanks to the BEST TRADE in NFL history (The Herschel Walker trade), and the hiring of Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys were able to manufacture greatness from it. The Special Teams were solid, they had a good return team, the kicker and punter were average, but did the job. With all this talent, the Cowboys had the #1 defense, but as mentioned earlier, not one of their stars went to Hawaii that year. They had 8 defensive linemen who could start on ANY team at the time, on any given day: Charles Haley, Jimmie Jones, Jim Jeffcoat, Tony Casillas, Chad Hennings, Leon Lett, Russell Maryland, & Tony Tolbert. Ken Norton, Vinson Smith, Dixon Edwards, and Robert Jones were great! The unique thing about this Cowboy defense was their defensive line. The Cowboys were stacked at Linebacker, they had speed and tackled very well. On to the defense: Dallas had 2 rookies at starting at cornerback: Kevin Smith and Larry Brown. The 2 safeties were veteran safeties that fit in the system well, although Daren Woodson was only a rookie then, he got plugged in at LB on certain formations. ![]() The Cowboys unsung hero on offense was Alvin Harper, he broke the 49ers backs in 1992 in that NFC Championship game. This offense would obliterate today's defenses, just because of their line & the overall team speed. Then there was the TE Jay Novacek, he was faster than most linebackers at the time, it was like having a WR at the TE position. ![]() Did I leave out the Fullback Moose Johnston? He didn't hurt Emmitt's yardage totals either, he blasted through people off the line, so it was like having anther o-line man, coming out of the backfield at the LBs. Aikman, having one of the best offensive lines ever, gave him time to throw the football, so his accuracy was stellar. Although most people might agree, the Pro Bowl doesn't hold as much weight as being an ALL PRO, the Pro Bowl is probably more of a popularity contest.ĭallas had talent all over their offense:Įmmitt Smith was great, but then he had one of the greatest offensive lines of all time, can we blame him for being the all-time leading rusher? Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin were unstoppable, Aikman was good, but his career numbers are lower because of Emmitt running the rock. ![]() They had the speed, the talent, they had the #1 DEFENSE and none of their defensive players, went to the Pro Bowl. ![]() The 1992 Dallas Cowboys, in my opinion, could run with any team today.
